Types of Carpet

Nylon

Polypropylene (Olefin)

Polypropylene (Olefin)

  • Very soft, durable, resistant to stains and abrasion
  • Resistance to wear, mould, mildew and rot
  • Last up 12 to 15 years
  • Popular carpet fibre

Polypropylene (Olefin)

Polypropylene (Olefin)

Polypropylene (Olefin)

  • Almost as soft as nylon
  • Known as Olefin
  • Similar to natural wool
  • Highly stain-resistant
  • Prone to soiling and holding onto oils which in turn, collect dirt

Polyester

Polypropylene (Olefin)

Polyester

  • Man-made fibre and more hypoallergenic than other fibres
  • Some are made from recycled plastic bottles, eco-friendly
  • Prone to flattening underweight, not great for high traffic areas
  • Prone to oil stains, which are very hard to remove from polyester fibre

Acrylic

Loop Pile

Polyester

  • Marketed as synthetic wool (Feel and appearance of wool)
  • Resistance to static electricity, moisture, mildew, fading and staining
  • Not a very durable material and doesn't hold up well in high traffic areas
  • Sometimes blended with wool
  • Stains can turn brown with certain alkaline chemicals (Found in cleaning products)

Wool

Loop Pile

Loop Pile

  • Luxurious, long-lasting material, the softest carpet fibre
  • Low-grade wool is more susceptible to staining
  • Some manufacturers combine wool with synthetic fibres to create a carpet with the benefits of both (Wool/Acrylic blends are common)
  • Pure wool carpet is made with no chemicals or additives
  • Excellent choice for those with allergies or sensitivities to chemicals
  • Prone to damage from mould and mildew, which feed on organic substances
  • Not for areas where high humidity and moisture are an issue

Loop Pile

Loop Pile

Loop Pile

  • Known as uncut pile or Berber pile
  • Loop pile leaves the entire yarn loop intact on the surface of the piece
  • Highly durable, easy to clean and resistant to stains
  • Use in high traffic areas
  • Doesn't show indentations caused by footprints and vacuum marks
  • Comes in variations, such as level loop, where the fibre loops are all the same length and patterned loops (Loops are different heights)
  • Possible for a carpet to have cut and loop construction, where some fibres are cut and others are looped
  • Loops of the uncut pile are less soft and padded than cut-pile fibres
  • Snagging hazard, particularly for pets or small children

Cut Pile

Saxony Pile

Saxony Pile

  • A style where the exposed fibres are sheared off
  • Soft, inviting, easy to clean carpet
  • Comes in different lengths and thicknesses
  • Easier to see footmarks and vacuum trails
  • Tendency is reduced by the twist of the fibres
  • Fibres contain a twist that helps the carpet stand up against matting and crushing
  • Heavy twist helps create texture that hides wear and dirt
  • Will need to be replaced more often

Saxony Pile

Saxony Pile

Saxony Pile

  • Type of cut pile carpet with fibres that are very soft and dense
  • Short fibres stand straight up and down (Create a lush, fuzzy surface)
  • Strands are easily crushed down by feet and vacuum cleaners, leaving impressions on their surface
  • Susceptible to wear and tear (As well as staining)
  • Best suited for use in low-traffic areas
  • More expensive than traditional cut pile carpets

Plush Pile

Saxony Pile

Textured Cut

  • Known as velvet cut pile
  • Style is a variation of cut pile
  • Fibres are even shorter than with a Saxony cut and very densely packed
  • Rich and luxurious carpet surface
  • Prone to wearing down, scuffing and showing footprints
  • Should only be used in luxurious, low-traffic settings

Textured Cut

Frieze Cut Pile

Textured Cut

  • Refers to cut pile carpet in which the fibres are of uneven lengths
  • Twisted into spiral strands using a special steam treatment that curls the individual strands
  •  Trackless style
  • Spiral strands do not reflect light as much as straight strands, so it's not as noticeable when spirals are crushed down
  • Suitable for mid to high-level traffic areas

Frieze Cut Pile

Frieze Cut Pile

Frieze Cut Pile

  • Frieze cut pile refers to a carpet in which relatively long cut fibres are twisted together and kinked
  • Curl erratically across the surface of the carpet
  • Known as California shag
  • The highly durable style tends to hide dirt and wear
  • Suitable for high-traffic and commercial settings

Sculpted Pile

Frieze Cut Pile

Frieze Cut Pile

  • Has both looped and cut-pile fibres
  • Creates height and texture variations in the surface of the carpet
  • Known as Patterned carpets
  • Arranged in geometric patterns, giving the carpet a three-dimensional texture
  • Different fibre cuts can all be the same length (Level Cut and Loop), or they can be at different heights (Textured Cut and Loop)
